It’s no secret that we have amazing students at Թ! Our students go above and beyond to achieve their big goals in life, and we’re so proud of them!

One such student is Jaden Wilks, a senior at iSucceed, who is going to the National 4-H Contest later this month.

For the first time in 30 years, Idaho is sending a 4-H dairy cattle judging team to the World Dairy Expo in Wisconsin. Four young women—including Jaden Wilks—will represent Idaho at the National 4-H Contest.

“I am excited to be part of this because I was first-place high individual for the contest this year,” Wilks told AG PROUD. “In 2023, I was also the high individual and top team in Idaho FFA dairy judging and got to travel to Indianapolis, Indiana. So being able to say I have been top individual and represent Idaho in 4-H and FFA is super exciting.”

It’s no secret that we have amazing students at Թ! Our students go above and beyond to achieve their big goals in life, and we’re so proud of them!

A couple of these students are 17-year-old Raney Walters, an Թsenior, and 15-year-old Rylee Walters, an Թsophomore.

Part of a multigenerational family business, the sisters have a busy schedule on the mountain ranch. They feed the animals, move irrigation pipes and work in the meat shop—Wow! And they’re able to accomplish all of this AND get a high-quality, rigorous education because of the flexibility at iSucceed.

“I’m not really one who enjoys sitting in school — I like to be active, be doing things,” Raney told . “So, online school has been great for me. I get things done in the mornings and then I’m free to work and do other things.”

]]>

This year, we partnered with Advanced Via Individual Determination (AVID). You can learn more about the program here. But to sum it up, AVID is a nationally renowned program that helps students prep for life after high school and even earn some credits toward college in the process.

Although it’s new for us, we’ve already had several students enroll. To help our other students learn more about what it’s like to be an AVID student, we asked a few students some questions. See below.

Meet Esther and Amberle, Two AVID students at iSucceed

We talked to Esther S. (pictured left) and Amberle F. (pictured right), two awesome students here at iSucceed. Here’s what they told us about AVID.

What interested you about the AVID program?

“As soon as I was told that I could meet with peers and meet with them to help each other with school, I loved it.” – Esther S.

“I love working with people, that is one thing that I’ve always missed being an online school student, so when I heard about the collaboration of AVID I was hooked!” – Amberle F.

Since joining, what skills or resources have you learned?

“I have found AVID very useful. Working with my peers and being able to learn from them is so nice. It will help me in college and work being able to work better with others and split the work up. Learning how to work to find the answers to a problem.” – Esther S.

“My advisor has been very helpful with my plan for the future. She has helped me with some things that I need to have in place before I graduate that I would have never known about.” – Amberle F.

One component of the AVID program at Թis the group participation projects. What are your thoughts on that, and how has it worked out for you?

“There is something about talking to other students that understand what you are going through that makes it easier to do projects.” Amberle F.

What our teachers and counselors think:

What was it about the AVID program that made you decide on bringing it to iSucceed?

“It has a good track record of producing successful students. Also, I felt we could use the AVID program as a vehicle to help better prepare our college-bound students and to help them earn scholarships and Advanced Ops monies.” – Clayton Trehal, principal

Is there something that you believe would convince more students to join, if they only knew about it?

“I think the biggest hurdle is that it’s an extra commitment. We offer it as a 4th course, and it also has live class requirements that our normal courses don’t. I think many students can get a little freaked out about that, but if they stick with it, they’d find that the course is not too hard and that the live class/learning team requirements are beneficial.” – Clayton Trehal, principal

What do you enjoy most about teaching the AVID class/program?

“I enjoy teaching the AVID elective and seeing students apply the strategies they learn in AVID in their core classes. They are taking more rigorous courses and continuing to be successful while pushing their limits. Collaboration is also a huge part of our AVID program and I love seeing our students work together. Taking online classes can be isolating and make it hard to build relationships. Our AVID students are now meeting up online and in person on their own time to socialize and help each other in classes.” – Tara Downs, guidance

What online high school is like, according to a few of our students /2020/06/12/what-online-high-school-is-like/ /2020/06/12/what-online-high-school-is-like/#respond Fri, 12 Jun 2020 22:56:24 +0000 /?p=444024 The post What online high school is like, according to a few of our students appeared first on Թ.

]]>

Maybe you’re an online student already. Maybe you’ve heard of online school, and want to learn more. Or, perhaps you know of a cousin’s son’s nephew’s brother who does online school and that’s about it.

Whatever the reason, it’s always good to hear experiences from actual students.

That’s why we asked a few of our incredible students to share their stories.

What online high school is like for Թstudents

First, a little bit about ԹVirtual High School:

  • It’s tuition free
  • Available to 9–12th grade Idaho students
  • Has highly qualified teachers
  • And school events to meet classmates!
  • Even an award-winning curriculum designed for today’s learners
  • Offers three classes every nine weeks

You learn free of distractions and high school drama

“Being in an environment with a lot of crazy teenagers and a lot of chaos going on, I didn’t ever really focus well on school, I always just liked to goof around and hang out with friends. So, online was a good option because I was able to really focus and be alone instead of having to be in a group with friends and stuff, which was really distracting for me.” -McKaee

“When I was in traditional school, I got really distracted making sure that I was a part of the crowd. With iSucceed, that takes that pressure off, but then, at the same time, you have plenty of time to do your own thing.” – Celine

There are assignments and deadlines, but you can work at your pace

“The way we have our units done is there’s six units per class, five lessons each. We need to do 10 lessons a week, I usually do 15 so I can get everything done ahead of the game and finish a few weeks early…making your own schedule is super important. So, it all depends on you and you need to not be afraid to go by your own schedule. Doing your own thing at your own pace, that does work. I definitely don’t recommend leaving everything for the last week, though. It’s not a good idea.” – Anastasia

If you have a question, you just ask a teacher

“All the teachers are actually pretty good, like, if you make a mistake, they aren’t going to be like, “OK, you’re off the hook” or, “You’re in trouble” or something. They’ll say, “OK, we’ll give you a chance to make that up. That’s kind of the whole motto, it’s not ‘iFail,’ it’s iSucceed.” – Mark

“I also really like Թbecause you can talk one-on-one with your teacher basically any time you want, whether it’s a phone call, text message, email, they’re always available to talk through stuff with you. If you have any questions at all, your teachers are right there for you.” – McKaee

“The teachers are just really helpful, and they’re kind, and they always reach out if you’re having trouble, and you can always contact them.” Haley

The environment is actually pretty nice

For one:

“When you’re at home, you don’t have to worry about paying for lunch, it’s in your fridge. I just really like that school because I just like the community and the environment. ” – Mark

For another:

“I love going to the (school) events and talking to other students and feeling like I’m not alone. Everyone’s really nice and is like, ‘How are you doing? How’s your courses going?’” – Celine

And you can have flexibility for other things in your life

“I had some trouble with the last school that I went to. It interfered too much with my skating…I like the classes, I like the structure, I like the curriculum.” Haley

“If it weren’t for iSucceed, I would have never had the time or really the patience to be able to write (my) book, because the struggles with public school, there was so much stress that completely prevented me from being able to publish it, so as soon as I started iSucceed, I had the time to actually start focusing on doing this…” Anastasia

Probably what’s most incredible about iSucceed’s students is that when life throws challenges their way, they don’t just adapt, they excel and achieve their goals.

This year’s iSucceed’s Senior of the Year exemplifies that. She never ceases to amaze her teachers and counselors with her accomplishments and positive outlook, despite challenges in her life.

She will be introduced in a virtual graduation session on Friday, May 29. Since it is only open to our current graduates and their families, we asked if she would share a little bit about herself with the public. Check out her story below:

Kaceey Gay, Թ2020 Senior of the Year

“I am Kaceey Gay and I’m 18 years old. I enjoy going the lake, hiking and spending time with my son and family. My most favorite thing to do is to sit in my car and listen to music, I also love to write.

Some goals I have set for myself are to attend college and study Criminal Justice, get my own place and raise my son. I did attend two different schools before I came to iSucceed. My experience in the first high I went to was terrible. I was constantly made fun of and had a difficult time making friends. The second high school I went to was a great experience, I loved the teachers and the students in the school. But what made me come to Թwas needing a full-time job. I couldn’t go to public school and work full time. Թmade it very easy for me to be able to work.

When I first was in labor, I had over 162 missing assignments and the quarter was about to end at midnight. My principal gave me an extra week to finish my classes and pass. When the second quarter had started and my son was a newborn it was extremely difficult for me to able to focus on school. But one thing I did do was write all the assignments due that day and get them done. That made it easy for me, because I only had a few assignments to do and I was done for the day. I would do school when Greyson was sleeping. I would also try and do extra if I had time to do so.

When I went to Bennett Mountain High School, I told the counselor I wanted to graduate and she said that wasn’t an option for me. So when Crystal at Թhad told me if I took summer school I could graduate in March, and that’s when I made that goal of graduating early. If I didn’t graduate early, I most likely would not be passing my classes. I now have a full-time job and I’m a full-time mom. Թhas been a wonderful school and I’m so blessed to graduate with them. The counselor and the principal have helped me get the credits I needed and to graduate early.”

Congrats, class of 2020!

Happy Student Group

We don’t want to brag…except that we do!

Our students are incredible, and we think it’s worth boasting. They come from all different walks of life, and they push on to accomplish their goals.

This month, meet Ryan, who found his passion in the midst of trial. His mom also just so happens to be a counselor here, Ms. Karen Lesh, whom you can read about here.

Meet Ryan Schmitt, Student, bodybuilder

Ryan is a great student here at Թwho enjoys working on his 1980 Camaro and, more recently, bodybuilding.

Bodybuilding and powerlifting wasn’t something Ryan always thought he would do, but life opened the path for him one day.

“I played basketball every year until I injured my ankle and needed to rehab,” said Ryan. “When I was rehabbing, I started lifting a lot more.  I became interested in bodybuilding when I started to see some results. I instantly became addicted to it because of how I felt and the results that I saw. Although it takes a lot of time, it does not feel like a commitment for me anymore…it is more like a hobby.”

It may be a hobby, but it’s something Ryan is pretty great at, which you can see in the video above bench pressing heavy weights.

“Due to my age and living in Idaho there aren’t many competitions or local clubs to join. I work out at Crunch Fitness and we have a small home gym. I train with my older brother who graduated from Թlast year along with local body builders.”

It’s really an Թfamily. His brother graduated from Թand his mom, Karen Lesh, is a counselor here at Թtoo!

Being the great mom and counselor she is, Ms. Lesh has encouraged Ryan to get the grades he needs to get into the school he wants. After graduating, he plans to:

“Attend BSU to study forensics and criminology. I am considering joining ROTC at BSU. Post graduation I will work for a year and then apply to the FBI. My goal when starting this year was to get all A’s. I needed to get my GPA to a 3.0 to get accepted into BSU and the other colleges I applied to. I am on track to reaching that goal after this quarter.  I will graduate high school with a higher GPA than I thought possible which will hopefully open up some more scholarship opportunities.”

“I became interested in Թbecause my brother moved over last year as a senior and he liked the flexibility of the school. For me, going into my senior year I only needed six credits to graduate. I chose to become an online student so I could have a flexible schedule to bodybuild and work part time to save money for college,” said Ryan.

To save up for college, Ryan works at Home Depot, where his job includes helping customers load their vehicles and helping them with anything else they need. Ryan says juggling school and work successfully is a matter of setting a schedule at the beginning of every week and sticking to it.

“I like Թbecause I can create my own school schedule which allows more available hours to work,” said Ryan. “The teachers and staff are available to help whenever I have asked.”

In addition to the teacher’s availability, Ryan’s favorite thing about Թis the flexibility it offers:

“The main benefits are schedule flexibility, good classes and availability of teachers and staff. The flexible schedule allows me to cook my meals and workout two hours a day. I would not be able to work as much and put the dedication and time into the gym if I would have stayed at my previous high school. I have been able to save up a pretty good amount of money for college as well.

For anyone interested in online school, Ryan shares a piece of advice:

“Some people think that switching to online school is easier than being in a building. I can tell you that you do have more flexibility, but the same amount of work. You have to be organized and accountable…I believe that learning to self regulate in online school will transfer to being a good college student.” – Ryan Schmitt, 17

We could go on and on about our amazing students. They all come from very different walks of life and work so hard to accomplish their goals!

And Sophy Spelliscy, a sophomore here at iSucceed, is no exception.

She’s an actress, she likes to paint and she’s set to graduate a year early! A little more about her acting: Sophy spends a lot of hours a week working with coaches to perfect her piece. She then enters drama competitions. The picture above is her “district” competition where she took first place and went to state.

“In November and December I took part in Drama Competitions. The one in November was Districts. I competed in two categories: a Solo Audition and an Original Serious. A Solo Audition is when you perform two contrasting monologues. An Original Serious is when you write an original script that is non-humorous and is usually performed with a group. For Districts I performed each of my pieces three times in front of judges. When the results were announced both of my pieces made it to State and my Solo Aud got first! I also tied for first with my amazing teammate, Sasha! At State, which was in December, both of my pieces didn’t make it to semifinals. But, I am very thankful for having made it to State and for my wonderful team and coaches,” said Sophy.

Sophy is also an active participant in the Solid Rock theater club.

“I’m apart of Solid Rock. It’s a theatre department at Rocky Mountain High School. Within it I participate in Advanced Acting and Advanced Stagecraft. I put on three shows a year with stagecraft, which involves costumes, makeup, lights, sound, props, and set. For the last show I was Makeup Designer and for the musical (Matilda) I am doing costumes. I act in two of those shows,” said Sophy.

Sophy first came to Թbecause the public system wasn’t meeting her specific needs.

“I became interested in Թwhen my current high school began to not meet my needs anymore. I needed a healthier option and Թwas that.

Before attending iSucceed, I attended [a public high school]. It is a very crowded school and is hard to learn one-on-one with a teacher. Now that I attend Թfor my core classes, I can learn at my own pace and ask questions comfortably, said Sophy.

Being the motivated student that she is, Sophy is set to graduate high school a year early! After graduation, she plans to attend college to study American Sign Language (ASL).

Congrats to Sophy on all her accomplishments! To learn how you can graduate early through iSucceed, check out this article.

Since 2008, we’ve had the privilege of helping hundreds of students earn their high school diplomas online. And in that time frame, we’ve seen thousands of incredible students who accomplish great things.

That’s why we like to take the time to shine light on just a few of our awesome students.

For example, Connor Chapman. He’s a 15-year-old on track to graduate early. Here’s how, along with a little more info about him:

Tell us about yourself!

I like to admire nature, and I enjoy reading and writing. I like the works of H.P. Lovecraft in particular. I love to learn new things, the more subjects I study the better. I love to be able to have an educated discussion on many different topics. I have a strange obsession with mechanical pencils, one can never have too many.

Looks like you’re dual-enrolled at Emmett High School; what class(es) are you taking at Emmett?

Currently, I’m taking Art 1, but starting Nov. 15th I’ll be in Art 2 and Painting. I’m also a part of the Art Club at Emmet High.

What are some of your goals after high school?

I’d like to go to University of Idaho.

Why did you become interested in iSucceed?

I had just started at another online school and I didn’t like it at all. They wouldn’t let me go at my own pace. So I googled online schools in Idaho and Թwas the top result.

Some students need a bit of time to figure out a system to be successful online, but you did really, really well your first quarter! What skills that you already had/have do you feel made the transition to online a bit more smooth for you?

I was enrolled in another online school for a week, and their system was a nightmare. So learning this one was easy. Also, the process of elimination is a good teacher.

Looks like you were able to test out of a bunch of classes; what background do you have that allowed you to get through all of that? It is pretty impressive!

I was homeschooled for a while so I was already familiar with the subjects I tested out of. The fact that they let me test is one of many benefits. And with the help of my teachers, advisor, and counselor, I have never been more academically successful.

When you started at iSucceed, what type of goals did you have in regards to your education?

Honestly, I just wanted a diploma at first. But now, I’m trying to get 32 credits in a single year!

Do you have any advice for new Թstudents?

Yes, work hard, take breaks, sleep, and drink water. The only way to be successfull is to be determined and to take care of yourself. Also, everyone can benefit from a schedule.

“If students want to graduate early, they should take as many classes as they can handle without being overwhelmed. They should also look into Dual Credit courses.”
